Academy shows well in championship series

The Menace Academy's 16U (left) and 15U Red (right) teams won Presidents Cup state titles on Oct. 29 in Muscatine.
MUSCATINE, Iowa – Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017 - All six of the Menace Academy boys teams competing in the Iowa Soccer Championship Series advanced to the final weekend of play. Three of them walked away with Presidents Cup titles.

“Congratulations to the Menace Academy 15U Red, 16U and 17U teams for winning Presidents Cup,” Menace Academy director of coaching Tomas Boltnar said. “It was a great way to wrap a successful three weekends of this statewide tournament.”

The Menace Academy 18U and 19U teams made it to the final and semifinals of their respective age groups in the top-tier State Cup.

This breaks a streak of five straight Iowa State Cup championships for the 19U boys led by Boltnar.

“It was a tough one to swallow for everyone involved, but sometimes you can learn a lot more from losing,” said Boltnar. “I don’t think that this moment could come at a better time for this group as they look to continue to soccer careers at the collegiate level and with the Menace first team.”

The results from the championship series’ first two weekends (played in Altoona and Des Moines) determined the matchups for this past weekend’s semis and finals in Muscatine.
